One goal of the Cooper Armstrong U12 fastpitch team this season was developing skills. A bonus came into play recently when the team qualified for U12B West National Tournament in Midland, Texas, July 31 to Aug. 6.
"As the season progressed, the players' skills grew and so did their dreams," said coach Mike Smith. "They really came together as a team and all the players helped each other get better every week."
Smith said the goal at the start was to qualify for the state tournament, adding, "To make nationals is big, thick icing on the cake."
Late in the season the Tides won several close games. In one contest, Cooper Armstrong had to come from behind to tie Wayzata. In extra innings, the Tides had to rally again to win on a single by Chelsea Bous.
At the state tournament in Grand Rapids, the team qualified for nationals when Sammy Smith and Anna Hjerpe shared pitching time to hold Coon Rapids to four runs on six hits.
A double by Chrissy Lewis scored Sam Dolezal to give the Tides a 4-3 win. Leading the defense in the game was catcher Kasey Fan, who threw out three runners trying to steal third base.
Annie Eggen made a diving stop for a key out in the fifth and outfielders Casey Anderson and Maggie Flaherty chased down fly balls, along with Laura Schuld, who also worked behind the plate.
Top reserves are Emily Harper-Hellie and Sarah Dunbar. Ebony Pruitt was one of the team's top hitters, but a concussion put her out of action.
Coaching with Smith was Brian Anderson, Jessica Composto and Brandon Martin. Alex Smith is the team manager.
