Benilde-St. Margaret's is trying to build winning momentum heading into the section football playoffs.

The Red Knights must regroup from a 28-0 North Suburban Conference loss to host Spring Lake Park Oct. 13.

Spring Lake Park and Totino-Grace are tied for first in the conference with 6-0 records. Chisago Lakes is third (5-1). Benilde and Cooper are tied for fourth with 4-3 league records.

Benilde was scheduled to host St. Louis Park in the regular-season finale last night (Wednesday).

The Red Knights enter the Class 4A, Section 5 playoffs beginning Tuesday, Oct. 24, at the site of the highest seed.

"We want to beat St. Louis Park and get momentum for the playoffs," said Benilde coach Patrick Krieger. "We should be seeded about third or fourth in our section.

"Minneapolis Washburn will probably be the number one seed."

The Section 5 field includes Benilde, Washburn, Henry, North, Roosevelt, Edison, Columbia Heights and Holy Angels.

The Red Knights encountered a state tournament caliber team last week. Spring Lake Park raised its unbeaten record to 7-0 with a 28-0 victory over BSM.

The two North Suburban teams battled through a scoreless first half before Spring Lake recovered its own fumble in the end zone for a third-quarter touchdown.

The Panthers added three scores in the fourth quarter on a 16-yard pass, 39-yard run and 2-yard run.

"We moved the ball well within the 30-yard lines but couldn't score," said Krieger. "Spring Lake Park is a well-coached and disciplined team.

"Our three turnovers didn't help our cause."

Red Knight quarterback Jon Lynch completed 11 of 28 passes for 205 yards but threw two interceptions.

Mark Muston was Benilde's leading receiver with seven catches for 131 yards.

Benilde's rushing attack was held to 83 yards. Michael Durkin led the Red Knights with 38 yards on 12 carries.

Benilde's defense came up with two fumble recoveries. Linebacker Tom Harm and end John Grupa recovered Panther fumbles.
