To the editor:
In a recent debate, Coleen Rowley said the draft is something we have to consider.
We can have our disagreements on the war on terror and how it is fought. But to advocate such a radical departure from current policy to force our sons and daughters into the military simply to advance her quirky views of the war on terror is incredibly irresponsible.
As a 25-year Marine Corps veteran who has made four trips to Iraq and whose son just returned after a year in Iraq flying Blackhawk helicopters for the Army's 101st Airborne Division, my perspective is somewhat unique. And I categorically state that not only is a military draft not necessary, but I will oppose it because it will harm our nation's defense.
Sadly, Rowley will do everything she can to advance her single-issue war protest campaign even if it means undermining the military effectiveness and teamwork of our all-volunteer force by supporting a military draft.
