Jeff Crepeau wants to put a dent in $1 million.
It may seem like an overwhelming number, but for a cause like Sew Much Comfort, which outfits military personnel with adaptive clothing during injury recovery, he said it's worth it.
"It's about taking care of the people who give us our freedom," he said.
Crepeau of Apple Valley created the Save and Support Discount Card, a fundraising tool for nonprofits such as Sew Much Comfort.
The card includes 24 business discounts within the south metro and Mall of America. Each business on the card donated a one-time discount on their product or service through a "buy one get one free" offer in support of the fundraising campaign. The discount card costs $20, with 75 percent of the profits benefiting Sew Much Comfort.
An active member of Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church, Crepeau started the card program about two years ago for a summer youth ministry fundraiser. Since then he's worked with churches, local high school booster clubs and nonprofits to assist in fundraising.
With a background in marketing, Crepeau started his career in fundraising more than 20 years ago. For the past 10 years, Crepeau has been involved in his children's school and various activities. That's how he met Apple Valley resident Deb Galligan, co-founder of Sew Much Comfort.
"I said to Deb, 'you guys have so much need,'" said Crepeau. "Over the last four months it's been one of those grassroots efforts."
Sew Much Comfort, established in December 2004, adapts clothing to accommodate medical devices and situations, while providing ease of use, personal independence and minimizing the visual impact of their medical condition.
Their main item is boxer shorts, altered by adding a Velcro strip down the side, allowing them to be worn without stepping through the leg holes. The idea is to accommodate medical devices and situations such as braces, fixators, casts, prosthetics and burns.
Now that Sew Much Comfort has a $1 million fundraising goal for materials and shipping costs, Crepeau designed and created the card using experience working with different businesses and industries in fundraising specifically for the Sew Much Comfort organization.
"This is the least I can do for the service members who have given up their livelihood," he said.
The Save and Support Discount Cards can be purchased at the Ramada Mall of America, Hilton Garden Inn Eagan, Dairy Queen/Orange Julius at Mall of America, Valley Bike & Ski Shop in Apple Valley, Staybridge Suites in Eagan, the IMAX Theater at the Minnesota Zoo, Fort Snelling Federal Credit Union in Minneapolis, Walser Toyota in Bloomington, Holiday Inn Express Eagan, Microtel Inns & Suites in Bloomington, Embroidme in Burnsville, Le Bourget Hotel in Bloomington, Hampton Inn in Burnsville, the Days Inn in Burnsville and the Staybridge Suites Bloomington.
"Hopefully this is just the beginning," said Crepeau, who is seeking additional purchase locations.
Crepeau is also asking local employee clubs, company stores, service clubs and ticket box offices, to carry the cards for purchase.
In addition to the Save and Support Discount Cards, Sew Much Comfort has partnered with Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church for a boxer shorts drive. Throughout June, the church will serve as a regional collection site for new boxer shorts (dark colored preferred) sizes L, XL, and 2XL. A drop off box is in the main entryway. Shepherd of the Valley is east of the Minnesota Zoo at 12650 Johnny Cake Ridge Road in Apple Valley.
"God has a plan and I'm going to do my best," said Crepeau. "I really feel confident."
"The sky's the limit."
