Dr. Steven Shu envisions his new One Stop Medical Center in Edina as a place where people can get family medical care and specialty care in one spot.
In addition to family medicine, Shu performs specialty procedures for a variety of illnesses that normally would require a separate specialist.
One Stop Medical Center recently opened in Southdale Medical Center on France Avenue. The office is in the lower level of the medical center near the tunnel to Fairview Southdale Hospital.
Shu performs office procedures for such things as skin cancer and other skin diseases, gastroenterology, breast diseases, pain management, hemorrhoids and arthritis.
"I hope my practice can provide a unique service for people in Edina and the surrounding area," Shu said.
He said his service model is new because it goes beyond the services and procedures available at the typical family medicine office.
"It is a new, unique model aimed at reducing the fragmentation of the current medical system," Shu said.
Shu has been working at Northwest Family Physicians in Crystal for the last six years. He is also an assistant professor in the family medicine residency program at the University of Minnesota.
As if three jobs were not enough for Shu, he also publishes a Chinese-language newspaper in Minnesota.
Shu graduated from Shanghai Medical University in China in 1984 and worked as a surgical attending physician until 1991. He later completed an internship at Flushing Hospital in Queens, N.Y., and a residency in family medicine at Michigan State University.
Eventually he would like to expand the One Stop Medical Center into an in-house training clinic.
"My vision is for this clinic to grow into a procedure institute," Shu said.
One of Shu's main areas of expertise is in anorectal diseases, and he performs about 1,000 hemorrhoid treatments each year.
"I can say in the U.S. I'm one of the few family physicians who can do numerous office procedures," Shu said.
Shu shares his office with an acupuncturist, so patients have the opportunity to be treated with both western and traditional Chinese medicine.
Shu said the name One Stop Medical Center also means that he can treat illnesses from early to mid to late stages.
One Stop Medical Center's hours are 9 a.m. to noon Monday and Saturday and 1 to 5 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday.
