Create a Thanksgiving project with little ones

Parents and their little ones can make a craft project to celebrate Thanksgiving at Turkey Time from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 13, at the Crystal Community Center, 4800 Douglas Drive, Crystal.

The class is part of the Hand and Hand series sponsored by the New Hope, Crystal and Robbinsdales parks and recreation departments.

The classes are intended to encourage children ages 3 to 5 and a parent to be creative and have fun.

Youth, with a little help from parents, will make a poseable Tom Turkey with legs that swing and wings that flap, a few turkey treats and a game for the family festivities.

The fee is $10 for a parent and child from New Hope, Crystal or Robbinsdale and $12 per pair for nonresidents.

Registration deadline is Thursday, Nov. 6.

New Hope open gym

Come jump, run, crawl and have a great time at the New Hope Community Gyms.

Parent and Tot Gym Time, sponsored by the New Hope Parks and Recreation Department, gives children ages 1 to 5 and a parent the opportunity to play with a variety of balls, cars, scooters and more. No instruction is provided.

Gym sessions are from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesdays. The cost is $3 per child each visit or $20 for a 10-visit punch card. Parents play for free.

The New Hope Community Gyms are located at 8230 47th Ave. N. on the north side of Cooper High School.

Kick the holidays off right

The New Hope Parks and Recreation Department is offering a deal on tickets to the "Radio City Rockettes Spectacular" at the Target Center on Saturday, Nov. 8.

Upper-level reserved tickets are $49. Ticket payment is due at the time they are ordered.

Participants provide their own transportation.

The show begins at 3:30 p.m., but ticket holders should plan on arriving at least a half-hour before show time.

The deadline to register is Monday, Oct. 13, or when spaces fill.

Tripsters going to Christmas at Mayowood

The Community Tripsters will experience Christmas at Mayowood in Rochester, Minn., on Wednesday, Nov. 13.

The historic, 38-room Mayowood mansion was built by Mayo Clinic co-founder, Dr. Charles H. Mayo, in 1911 and is on the National Register of Historic Places.

The group will tour more than 20 rooms decked out in holiday finery.

Other stops will include the Olmstead County Historical Center and lunch at the historic Hubbell House in Mantorville, Minn.

The trip is $57 per person, and includes motorcoach transportation, tour, lunch, escort, tax and gratuities.

The bus will leave the Kmart parking lot across from New Hope City Hall at 7:15 a.m. and return about 5:15 p.m.

Register by Tuesday, Oct. 28.

Donut Make You Wonder?

Author and historian Dennis Gardner will talk about several of the state's historic bridges and their impact on Minnesota life and culture at the next session of Donut Make You Wonder? from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 15.

The program will be held at the Crystal Community Center, 4800 Douglas Drive, Crystal.

The fee is $2, which includes a continental breakfast.

The New Hope Skating School is offering figure skating lessons on Monday evenings and Saturday mornings beginning the week of Oct. 13 and ending in mid-December.

Monday evening sessions include group figure skating lessons for 3 to 5 year olds and Alpha level, and ISI Beginning Hockey from 6:30 to 7 p.m.; and lessons for beginners ages 6 to 12, Beta, Gamma, Delta and adults from 7 to 7:30 p.m.

Saturday sessions include group figure skating lessons for 3 to 5 year olds and Alpha level, and ISI Beginning Hockey from 9:45 to 10:15 a.m.; and lessons for beginners ages 6 to 12, Beta, Gamma, Delta, Freestyle 1 and adults from 10:45 to 11:15 a.m.

The fee for 10, half-hour group skating lessons is $75 for New Hope residents and $80 for nonresidents.

Class sizes are limited. Private figure skating lessons are also available.

The New Hope Parks and Recreation Department is sponsoring a skateboard camp from 9 a.m. to noon Thursday, Oct. 16, during MEA break at the New Hope sk8 pad at Civic Center Park, 4401 Xylon Ave. N.

The camp, taught by instructors from 3rd Lair, is for beginner through expert skateboarders ages 6 to 15.

Participants will work on learning or refining skills including dropping in, pushing, balance to pushing, skate park safety and etiquette.

Youth should bring their skateboard and a helmet. Knee pads, elbow pads and wrist pads are highly recommended.

The fee is $44 for New Hope residents and $49 for nonresidents.

Half Pint Safety Camp

The New Hope and Crystal parks and recreation departments and the West Metro Fire-Rescue District are sponsoring a Half Pint Safety Camp from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 16.

The camp is for children in kindergarten and the first grade.

Safety topics will include electrical safety, personal safety, fire safety, a tour of the Police Department, a police canine demonstration, a visit by critters from the Minnesota Zoomobile and more.

Lunch, snacks, a camp T-shirt and a graduation event are included in the $16 fee for New Hope and Crystal residents. Nonresidents pay $5 more.

Space is limited.

Babysitter training

The New Hope Parks and Recreation Department is offering a Babysitter's Training course for youth ages 11 to 15 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 18.

The class will be held at New Hope City Hall, 4401 Xylon Ave. N.

It will cover safety and safe play, basic care of children, first aid, leadership and professionalism.

The course is done in cooperation with the American Red Cross. Participants must attend the entire session to be certified.

Students should bring a bag lunch.

The fee is $48 for New Hope residents and $53 for nonresidents.

Register by Friday, Oct. 10.
