Phil Sterner, DFL, was elected Tuesday, Nov. 4, to Minnesota House District 37B - formerly a Republican strong hold.

Sterner defeated Republican Judy Lindsay 52.1 percent to 46.9 percent to represent the district, which covers Rosemount and parts of Apple Valley. Both are Rosemount residents.

Of the 24,304 votes tallied from 14 precincts, Sterner received 12,668 to Lindsay's 11,388. The position carries a two-year term with an annual salary of $31,140.

"We've shown that we can be a moderate voice that can work with both sides of the aisle and do what's best for the district," said Sterner, president of Sterner Insurance Agency and current Rosemount City Council member.

He said his leadership style was closest to that of outgoing Republican Rep. Dennis Ozment, who is retiring after 24 years in the position.

"I'm feeling really, really good. It's been a long campaign and a long day, but I'm excited to serve the residents of Rosemount and Apple Valley," said Sterner just after midnight Election night.

He celebrated the win with friends, family and campaign workers at Carbone's Pizza in Rosemount before heading to a party in St. Paul.

Lindsay, a small-business owner, is a former member of the Rosemount-Apple Valley-Eagan District 196 School Board.

Election results also included 248 write-in votes for approximately 1 percent of the turnout.
