Fitzgerald tops Richfield Sports Achievers

When Larry Fitzgerald played high school football at Holy Angels, he appeared to be headed for stardom.

That day has definitely arrived. Fitzgerald has led the NFL's Arizona Cardinals to a division title and into the playoffs.

The 6-foot-4 receiver was recently selected to play in the Pro Bowl.

Fitzgerald tops the Sun-Current's list of the top 20 Sports Achievers for 2008. Following are profiles of the other 19 Sports Achievers in alphabetical order.

The Richfield High School senior is bidding for a return trip to the state Class AAA wrestling tournament.

Last season, Copeland finished 23-18 and finished second at the Section 6AAA tournament.

He also had an outstanding football season as a linebacker in 2008, finishing second on the team in tackles with 66.

The junior quarterback led the Richfield High football team to a 5-5 record in his first season as a starter in 2008.

Fitzgerald joined the list of Richfield's all-time passing leaders by throwing for 1,238 yards. Eight of those pass completions went for touchdowns.

The Richfield High athlete made all-conference teams in two sports, golf and tennis, in 2008.

Flynn qualified for the state Class AA golf meet for the third time in her career. Although she had mono at the time, she placed 28th overall at the state meet.

In her senior season of track and field at Richfield High, Ford-Washington had her ultimate career day at the state Class AA meet.

She finished second in the long jump with a career-best leap of 18 feet, 7 inches.

Ford-Washington was an all-conference performer in the jumps and the sprints last season.

The Richfield High School hockey standout opted out of his senior season to play for the Fargo Force in the United States Hockey League.

Gunner was an all-conference hockey player for 2007-08, when he led the Spartans with 54 points on 21 goals and 33 assists. He had 91 points in just two varsity seasons.

Richfield's American Legion Baseball team won the 48-team Gopher Classic title at the Metrodome thanks to Heger's heroics.

He hit a 400-foot home run and also made a game-saving catch to help Richfield defeat Bozeman, Mont., in the championship game, 3-2.

A three-sport star in the Richfield High athletic program, January is a hitter in volleyball, a forward in basketball and a catcher in softball.

She has decided to concentrate on basketball in college and has accepted a scholarship offer to play at the University of South Dakota.

Klass concluded her illustrious career at Richfield High by winning the Athena Award, which is presented annually to the most outstanding female athlete at each of the Minneapolis area high schools.

Klass qualified for state in tennis, helped the basketball team win the conference title and played second base for a section runner-up softball team.

The former Richfield High teacher and hockey coach was elected to the Minnesota High School Hockey Coaches' Hall of Fame in March 2008.

McCoy, the long-time coach of the Richfield Bantam "A" team, coached the local "B" Bantams to a state tournament berth last year.

In 2008, his senior year, Murdock joined a long list of successful Richfield High heavyweight wrestlers.

He qualified for the state meet by winning the Section 6AAA championship.

Murdock had more than 25 wins for the second straight season.

The Richfield High endurance athlete, who won multiple letters in cross country running, track and Nordic skiing, won the 2008 Tom Spooner Memorial Award as his school's most outstanding male senior athlete.

The Richfield High School volleyball and basketball standout had college offers in both sports, but has opted to play basketball on scholarship at St. Cloud State University.

She currently leads the Richfield girls basketball team with an average of almost 20 points per game.

As the defensive leader of the Richfield High football team, Novak specialized in stopping opponents dead in their tracks.

He led the Spartan defense in tackles with a total of 72, including 58 solos.

Novak is currently one of the leaders of the Spartan wrestling team.

The Richfield track and cross country star racked up several high finishes in 2008.

Her greatest achievement was winning the Classic Suburban Conference's individual cross country title during the fall season.

Olson, a 6-foot-7, 285-pound offensive tackle, started every game for the bowl-bound Northern Illinois University football team.

In his high school days, Olson won the Tom Spooner Memorial Award as Richfield's most outstanding senior male athlete. He is the son of Richfield athletic director Todd Olson and his wife, Lisa.

A top all-around athlete at Richfield High School, Robinson earned all-conference honors in football, basketball and track and field.

He was the leader of the Spartan football team last fall, scoring seven touchdowns and rolling up 598 yards in pass receptions.

In basketball last season, he was Richfield's leading rebounder and second-leading scorer.

The Richfield High track and field athlete set a school record in the high jump with a leap of 5 feet, 3 inches.

That jump was good enough to give the Richfield girl first place at the Classic Suburban Conference meet.

Richfield High's head girls basketball coach helped her team set a school record for victories last season.

The Spartans' 24-4 record included a 14-0 record in Classic Suburban Conference games.

Richfield reached the section semifinals before losing to Bloomington Kennedy.

The Richfield High track athlete was a triple medal winner at the state Class AA meet.

First, he finished fourth in the 100-meter dash, and then he followed up with an eighth-place finish in the 200-meter dash and a second place in the long jump.
