The Rosemount-Apple Valley-Eagan School District is reporting a wave of chicken pox at an Eagan elementary school. District Spokesperson Tony Taschner said about 30 cases have popped up at Pinewood Elementary School since January.
While the district is not required to report chicken pox incidence to the health department, Taschner said due to the high level of cases at one school it did.
The state and Dakota County Public Health Departments are recommending that students receive a second dose of the chicken pox vaccine. A new state law going into effect next year will require students entering kindergarten and seventh grade to have two doses anyway, said Taschner.
A Woodland Elementary School teacher was named the 2009 Elementary School Teacher of the Year by the Minnesota Council of the Social Studies. Stuart Samsky, a fourth-grade teacher, has taught in District 196 for 28 years, the last 21 at Woodland in Eagan. He will be recognized at the organization's annual conference tomorrow as well as the District 196 School Board meeting March 9.
The Rosemount City Council had a quick meeting last night. In less than five minutes it approved a handful of items, including spending $2,000 to attend an economic development conference this summer. Partnering with Apple Valley and Burnsville, they'll market property in the city to corporate real estate professionals in hopes of bringing more business to Rosemount.
One sector to take off recently in Rosemount is healthcare. On Monday, Rosemount's very first clinic opened for business. Fairview will be able to treat about 50 patients a day in a variety of services.
According to Clinic Site Manager Dawn Baddeley, Rosemount residents are already flocking to the site. The clinic was completely booked Tuesday. Fairview is looking to add a third physician to the staff.
Plans are also in the works for a HealthEast clinic on South Robert Trail at the former Genz-Ryan Plumbing location. A developer's proposal for the building was approved by the Rosemount Planning Commission Feb. 24, meeting. The plans will likely head to the City Council March 18.
For more information on both offices see next week's Apple Valley-Rosemount Sun Current newspaper.
