Minnetonka man who burned 3-year-old with spoons sentenced to 15 years
BY JOE KIESER
A Minnetonka man convicted of burning a 3-year-old boy with heated spoons was sentenced to 15 years in prison Tuesday, March 24.
"We are happy with the sentence he received," Minnetonka Police Chief Mark Raquet said.
Hussein Osman Ahmed, 25, was convicted of second-degree criminal sexual conduct and third-degree assault in February after a jury found him guilty of the charges. The jury found that Ahmed burned the boy on his genitals, back, leg, chest and hands in an attempt to potty train and discipline the boy. Ahmed was living at the Minnetonka apartment with the boy and his mother, where the abuse took place.
Authorities were notified of the abuse when the boy's mother took the boy to the hospital in December of 2007. The boy suffered red marks and lesions on his face, back, shoulder, abdomen, chest, arms, leg and genital area, according to the complaint. Minnetonka Police searched Ahmed's apartment and found spoons consistent with the patterns and marks that were found on the boy's body.
"It was one of those extreme cases we don't see often," Raquet said. "It was difficult for the detectives to investigate this type of case."
It took a jury just over an hour to comeback with a guilty verdict. Ahmed plans to appeal the court's decision according to the Hennepin County Attorney's Office.
