High school section and state playoffs continue this weekend for many area athletes involved in volleyball, football and cross-country running, while area teams that reached the state soccer tournaments have ended their seasons.
- The Fridley Tiger volleyball squad (21-8) is one of four teams still alive in the Section 5AA playoffs.
Fridley's Tigers will face the Delano Tigers in a semifinal at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 5, at Rockford High School, 7600 County Road 50.
The winners of that match will face either the Mora Mustangs or Maple Lake Irish for the section championship at 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 7, at Big Lake High School, 501 E. Minnesota Ave.
- Volleyball semifinals in Section 5AAA were scheduled to be played Wednesday, Nov. 4, (after this edition went to press), with the third-seeded Blaine Bengals facing the second seed Centennial Cougars before the fourth-seeded Spring Lake Park Panthers were to battle the top seed Osseo Orioles.
Wednesday's winning teams will face each other for the section title in a match scheduled for 7 p.m. Nov. 7 at Osseo High School, 317 Second Ave. N.W.
- The Blaine and Totino-Grace football teams both will host section title games at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 6.
In Section 6AAAA, the Eagles of Totino-Grace (9-0) will face the Red Knights of Benilde-St. Margaret's (8-2). Totino-Grace won at Benilde-St. Margaret's, 48-44 on Sept. 11.
In Section 7AAAAA, the Blaine Bengals (8-1) host the Centennial Cougars (9-1). Centennial won at Blaine 34-25 on Sept. 11.
The Section 6AAAA champions will face either Rogers or St. Michael-Albertville in a state quarterfinal at 7 p.m. Nov. 13 at Maple Grove. The Section 7AAAAA champs will face either Buffalo or Brainerd in a state quarterfinal scheduled for 8 p.m. Nov. 13 at St. Cloud State University.
- The boys' and girls' cross-country teams from Totino-Grace High School won their respective titles in Section 5AA last week, and will compete in the state meets Nov. 7 at St. Olaf College.
Among the Eagle boys competing at the section meet, junior Adam Braun finished second overall followed by junior Steve Dado in third. Three Eagle girls placed among their field's top 10, with senior Ally McSherry finishing fourth, senior Emily Kindlespire fifth and senior Jenny Dillon seventh.
The Blaine and St. Anthony Village programs each have one runner competing in Saturday's state meets.
Blaine junior Austin Woetzel finished ninth among the Section 5AA boys' field. St. Anthony eighth-grader Melissa Marsh finished 10th among the Section 4A girls' field.

The Blaine Bengal boys soccer team reached its state tournament in Class AA, but got knocked out in the quarterfinals 8-0 by the Apple Valley Eagles. Apple Valley will play for the Class AA state title at 5:30 p.m. Nov. 5 vs. the Wayzata Trojans at the Metrodome. The Blaine boys finished their season with a record of 13-8-1.
