Robbinsdale woman wins Martha Stewart pie contest - Sun Suburbs Today - Monday, Nov. 16
Marjorie Johnson of Robbinsdale has been named the winner of Martha Stewart's first-ever pie contest. The episode will air at 11 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 16, on "The Martha Stewart Show" on KMSP-Channel 9. Johnson also will return to the show the following day, Nov. 17, to bake he winning pecan pie with toffee with Martha. Johnson's pie was named the best for taste and appearance of the 161 pies that were baked and brought to Martha's New York TV studio by each member of the audience. Johnson has a long history of winning blue ribbons at the Minnesota State Fair for her baking.
Use on Nov. 16: Sue: Former Robbinsdale District 281 Superintendent Stan Mack and former Armstrong High School Principal Mark Bezek, now superintendent in Elk River, did not make the final cut in the St. Paul School Board's search for a new superintendent. The two were among six semi-finalists for the job. The three finalists, to be interviewed this week, include two St. Paul educators and a superintendent from Portland, Oregon.
For its presentation of "Guys and Dolls" held Saturday night, Nov. 14, the Fridley High School Drama Department sent out a special invitation to all Fridley alumni who were involved in the school's first production of this musical in 1981. Thom Melcher, a resident of Golden Valley, was one of a few alumni involved with that production 28 years ago to attend Saturday night's performance.
Melcher had the role of Police Lt. Brannigan, and met with Fridley freshman John Steinmann, who plays Brannigan in the current cast, after Saturday's show. Melcher spoke about the fun in coming back to Fridley, and spoke highly of Steinmann's performance:
"Guys and Dolls" is scheduled for three more performances on the Fridley stage Thursday through Saturday, Nov. 19-21. Reserved seating is $9 for adults, $6 for students and seniors. For more information, visit www.FridleyDrama.org
Use on Nov. 16: Stefanie: The Brooklyn Park City Council meets tonight at 7 p.m. in City Hall, which includes three public hearings and the 2010-2011 capital budget. The St. Louis Park City Council meets at 7:30 p.m. at the SLP City Hall. It will discuss a major change in a plan for the Wooddale Pointe mixed-use project, a comprehensive plan change for Galaxy Drive In and setting liquor license fees, among other agenda items.
