Armstrong celebrates as six sign up for college
BY Nick Clark * SUN NEWSPAPERS
The proof was on the dotted line at Armstrong High School Wednesday, Nov. 11.
As a whole, the school has undergone an athletic resurgence in recent years, a fact solidified Wednesday in the AHS Auditorium, where six athletes signed national letters of intent on the first day of the early signing period.
It was Armstrong's largest signing class since 1991, when according to Activities Director Pattie Weldon, a school record 11 athletes took part in a similar ceremony.
That was a tough fact to swallow for the Falcon-six last week, none of which were even born the last time this many of them sat down at once to solidify their college choices.
"Armstrong sports has been kind of a rough bump and ride over the years, and I think we're bringing the school back up and things are starting to get back to where they used to be," said senior Ryan Usher, who as the only male in the group last week, signed a national letter of intent to play Division II men's lacrosse at Merrimack College in New Hampshire.
"There's a lot of talent here," Usher added. "I don't think a lot of it has been recognized as much as it should be. Hopefully this is a sign that we are starting to get recognized."
That was the perception Wednesday for a group headlined by a pair of Division I recruits.
Dominique Thompson continued a family legacy by becoming a Big Ten athlete after signing on to play volleyball at the University of Wisconsin, and Alyssa Marschner committed herself to Drake University, where she will play women's basketball.
Ali Hoefer will be playing college basketball as well after sending her letter to the University of Minnesota State, Mankato, the reigning Division II NCAA national champion.
And twin sisters Ally and Abby Kvidera found a way to spend at least the next four years together after both signed Division II women's lacrosse scholarship offers from Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colo.
"All six of these kids are just great individuals, and they've made great decisions in their choices," said Weldon. "Hopefully they are a sign of things to come for us. We've got outstanding athletes walking in our halls, but we also compete against a lot of outstanding athletes in our conference and in our region and I think we get overshadowed a lot. This is good for us"
It was even better for the lucky six, each of whom talked not only of the moment, but the chance to do it as one.
"It's fun to celebrate together," Marschner said. "Usually it is hard to get six athletes that all move on to college, but when you have friends these to do it with - they are all my close friends - it makes everything better."
