Richfield boys basketball team will rely on senior leadership
BY GREG KLEVEN
Richfield needs to fill a few holes left by the graduation of four players off last year's Spartan boys basketball squad.
Richfield finished 16-11 overall last season and placed fourth in the Classic Suburban Conference with a 10-6 record.
The Spartans lost to Bloomington Jefferson in first-round section action a year ago. The Jaguars went on to place fourth in the state Class 4A tournament.
Richfield will rely on senior tri-captains Corey Fitzgerald (6-3 guard), Ben Webster (6-6 center) and Jay Sewer (5-9 point guard) to remain competitive against in the Classic Suburban.
"We will count on our seniors for leadership," said Richfield coach Jim Dimick. "Fitzgerald is an excellent shooter while Sewer does a good job taking the ball to the basket.
"Webster appears ready to help our varsity team inside."
Richfield will also depend on three seniors who played on the Spartan Junior Varsity squad last season.
Keith Pahl is a 6-5 center. Ryan Gerdes (5-9) and Cameron McWhorter (5-8) are guard candidates.
Three juniors are expected to contribute to the Richfield varsity. Those players are 6-5 forward Jared Etienne, 5-9 guard Daron Garvis and 5-9 guard Cameron McWhorter.
Another Spartan varsity hopeful is 6-2 sophomore forward Darrien Johnson.
"There will be a lot of competition for varsity playing time," said Dimick. "Our sophomore team had a 22-4 record last season and many of those players will be pushing for spots."
Richfield opens its season against Mound-Westonka at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 5, at home.
The Spartans travel to Minneapolis North for a 7 p.m. game Tuesday, Dec. 8.
