Members of the Spring Lake Park school community last month welcomed Holocaust survivor Peter Fischl, 79, for a presentation in the high school Performing Arts Center. Fischl spoke for an hour Nov. 17 about his life experience in Hungary and, later, in the United States. A native of Budapest, Fischl was given refuge with other Jewish children in a Hungarian school during the Holocaust. He moved to the U.S. at age 27. He has a living sister, age 81, also in the U.S. They did lose their father during the Holocaust; he was taken by Nazis and they never saw him again.

During his presentation in Spring Lake Park, Fischl often spoke of oppression that continues today. He is a published poet and author with an autobiography titled, “And The World Who Said Nothing.”

Fischl’s visit was sponsored by Sam’s Club of Fridley and by the Panther Foundation. Leading the welcome for Fischl was eighth grade student Natasha Powell, who had been in contact with him for a school project in a language arts class last year. (Paul Rignell - Sun Newspapers)
