District 13 School Board hears about this year's energy efficiency program
BY KASSIE PETERMANN - Sun Newspapers
During a recent work session, the Columbia Heights District 13 School Board and staff discussed the future of its energy efficiency program.
Tom Foley, manager of buildings and grounds, said the district this year hired Energy Efficiency Coordinator Shawn Sandor, who will continue District 13's partnership with the Schools for Energy Efficiency (SEE) program.
Since 2005, the district has reduced its energy usage by 9.4 percent and has reached an average rating of 91 on the Environmental Protection Agency's 100-point Energy Performance Rating System.
Larson said lights at both the high school and middle school have recently been replaced with fluorescent bulbs. Estimated energy savings per year total about $1,400 for the high school and about $700 for the middle school.
As a three-year recipient of the Energy Star Top Leader Award, the district receives national recognition for its energy accomplishments and distinguishes itself as an environmental leader.
"I was impressed coming in," Sandor told the School Board. "You've made huge strides compared to other schools."
With a goal to reduce energy consumption by 10 percent, Sandor said she wants to continue educating students and get them more involved in becoming environmentally friendly.
The high school has a solar kit that teaches students about solar energy and Sandor will visit the elementary schools this spring to present to students.
The district is also looking at new recycling opportunities and what can be done in food services in terms of energy efficiency strategies.
"This program has been pretty well received by the kids and the staff," Board Chair Missy Lee said.
