Richfield suffers 71-58 boys basketball loss to Minneapolis South
BY GREG KLEVEN
Minneapolis South's 6-8 senior center Alonzo Traylor proved to be an obstacle that Richfield couldn't overcome in non-conference boys basketball action last week.
Traylor netted 26 points and pulled down 22 rebounds to spark South to a 71-58 victory over the host Spartans.
"I thought we did a pretty good job limiting Traylor until I saw his final stats," said Richfield coach Jim Dimick. "He is definitely a Division I college prospect."
Richfield's record is 1-1 after the loss to the Tigers. The Spartans will host Holy Angels at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 22.
Richfield hung with Minneapolis South on even terms for most of the game and trailed by only four points late in the game. But the Tigers pulled away by making free throws down the stretch.
"We played well but lost to a very good team," said Dimick. "The game was closer than the final score indicates, but South was able to hit its free throws in the final minutes."
Richfield's leading scorer was 5-9 senior guard Jay Sewer with 14 points. Daron Garvis, a 5-9 junior guard, had 12 points.
Other Spartan scorers were Corey Fitzgerald (8), Darrien Johnson (7), John Johnson (5) and Ben Webster (5).
