Richfield High School girls and boys basketball squads enjoyed their finest moments of the regular season last week.

Each Spartan team won three times to remain atop the Classic Suburban Conference standings.

Richfield's girls basketball squad is 9-4 overall and 3-0 in league play after defeating North St. Paul 48-45 Friday night at home.

The Spartans had a comfortable eight-point lead with 1:30 remaining in regulation before North St. Paul rallied to cut the final deficit to three points.

Richfield's leading scorers were Vanessa Uko (16), Jessica January (12), Charrelle Jackson (11) and Taylor Clarke (8).

"We had a great defensive effort against North St. Paul," said Richfield coach Lee Ann Wise. "But we have to learn how to close out games by taking care of the ball in the final minutes."

Richfield began the week with a 67-48 triumph over host Simley Jan. 5.

Three Spartan players scored in double figures including Uko (17), Jackson (13) and January (13).

Other leading Richfield scorers were Hannah Wise (9), Taylor Clarke (8) and Bry Guyton (5).

"Our pressure defense and effort paid off against Simley," said coach Wise. "We also cut down on turnovers."

Richfield defeated cross-town rival Holy Angels 50-44 in non-conference action Jan. 7 on the road.

January netted a team-high 19 points. Other top Richfield scorers were Uko (8), Wise (7), Jackson (6) and Clarke (6).

Holy Angels, 2-9 overall, was led in scoring by Laura Margarit (15) and Liz Lecy (14). Callie Hogan scored nine points and Alisha Anderson finished with six points.

Richfield will travel to Tartan for a 7:30 p.m. league contest Friday, Jan. 15. The Spartans will host Mahtomedi at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 19.

Boys post wins

Richfield boys basketball coach Jim Dimick has his team playing at a high level as well. The Spartans are 7-2 overall and first in the Classic Suburban with a 2-0 record.

Other leading Spartan scorers were Darrien Johnson (6), Daron Garvis (5), John Johnson (5) and Jared Etienne (4).

"It was a complete team effort," said Dimick. "Fitzgerald hit three straight three-point shots in the second half.

"Ben Webster and Etienne came up with key rebounds."

Richfield needed overtime before defeating Northfield 54-52 Jan. 7.

Sewer hit a key three-point shot in regulation. Darrien Johnson came though with a big steal and layup in overtime.
