Undefeated at 8-0, the Hopkins High girls basketball team is preparing for one of its biggest challenges of the season, the Dick's Sporting Goods Classic.

Hopkins is the host for the annual tourney, which will be played Dec. 28-30 at Hopkins Lindbergh Center.

"The whole reason we started this tournament seven years ago was to bring in eight of the best teams every year," said Hopkins head coach Brian Cosgriff.

Hopkins comes into this year's tournament ranked No. 1 in the state in Class 4A. Osseo and Eden Prairie, also in this year's field, are ranked in the top 10 in 4A. Rufus King High School from Milwaukee is ranked in Wisconsin.

"It is going to be an outstanding tournament," said Cosgriff. "We have four ranked teams and St. Paul Central's program speaks for itself."

Central won state Class 4A titles in 2007 and 2008.

On Wednesday, Dec. 28, the tournament will begin with Eden Prairie playing Rufus King at 2 p.m., Osseo facing Hutchinson at 4, Maple Grove tipping off against Hutchinson at 6 and Hopkins closing it out with Prior Lake at 8 p.m.

Semifinal games will be 6 and 8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 29, with consolation semifinal games earlier that day.

The championship game will be 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 30.

Cosgriff was asked what he expects in Hopkins' opening game against Prior Lake.

"Prior Lake is about .500," he said. "They've beaten White Bear Lake and Minneapolis Washburn and lost to Eden Prairie, Minnetonka and New Prague."

Hopkins is a deep team that plays tough man-to-man defense and likes to fast break.

Nia Coffey is the leading scorer, averaging 16 points per game. Her sister Sydney and center Gracia Hutson are other players returning as starters from last year's state championship team.
